How we choose where to travel

Choosing where to travel can be both exhilarating and overwhelming. With countless destinations on our bucket list, each holding its own allure, the decision-making process can feel like navigating a maze of possibilities. Yet, amidst this sea of choices, our adventures are shaped by a lot of factors, reflecting our passions, interests, and practical considerations.

In the past year and a half, our travels have taken us far and wide, from the untamed landscapes of Southern Africa to the vibrant streets of Mexico, from the charming cities of South Carolina and Florida to the historical allure of Boston, London, and Paris. But how do we determine where to set foot next?

For us, the journey often begins with a simple notification: a ping from Google Flight Alerts, whispering tempting destinations near and far. These alerts serve as our compass, guiding our gaze towards potential horizons. Johannesburg, Nairobi, London, Paris—the world becomes our oyster, ripe with possibilities.

Our love for safari drew us to the wilds of South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Botswana, a family adventure sparked by a drop in airfare. It was a chance to go back to Africa and share unforgettable moments with our children.

Florida beckoned to us, not once but twice, each visit fueled by different motives. The first was for a familiarization trip to the amusement parks of Orlando. The second was for a family reunion in South Carolina. I put flight alerts on for Orlando, Atlanta, and Charlotte. We based our trip on the best flights. We road tripped from Orlando to South Carolina.

The call of family led us to the heart of central Mexico, where our oldest son was teaching English. With Google Flight notifications set for several cities in Mexico, we flew from Salt Lake City, via Las Vegas to Mexico City.

An invitation from a friend led me to the historic streets of Boston. Our itinerary was shaped by the promise of a free companion flight. It's a reminder that the best adventures often unfold when least expected.

Now we are preparing for our next adventure to the cities of London and Paris.  An amazing flight offer solidified our plans for spring break. It was also from a Google Flight alert.

Almost all of the trips I plan start with flights.  Whether I am working with a client or for our personal travel. I love Google Flights. Look for our blog post about how to set Google Flight alerts.
